The Ayurvedic Tradition of Shiro Abhyanga — Why Head Oiling Works
The scalp is one of the richest concentrations of marma points — the energetic access points that Ayurveda maps throughout the body. When warm oil is massaged into the scalp with rhythmic, intentional touch, it does not simply nourish the hair follicles. It works through the marma system to calm the nervous system, reduce excess Vata and Pitta in the head, promote deep and restorative sleep, and address the anxiety and mental overactivity that so often accompany the hormonal and nutritional drivers of hair loss.
This dual action — therapeutic for the hair AND for the mind — is why Shiro Abhyanga has been central to Ayurvedic self-care for thousands of years. And it is why this oil, with its Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Vetiver nervine complex working alongside its hair-specific botanicals, delivers more than any targeted hair serum alone could offer.
The Two Pillars — Brahmi & Amla
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
In the context of hair care, Brahmi’s role is profound and twofold. As a powerful nervine adaptogen, it addresses the stress and nervous system activation that is one of the most common — and most overlooked — drivers of hair loss. Chronic cortisol elevation directly disrupts the hair growth cycle, pushing follicles prematurely into the telogen (resting) phase and resulting in the accelerated shedding that so many people experience during periods of sustained pressure. Brahmi applied to the scalp works through the same GABA-modulating and cortisol-reducing pathways described in our Magnolia Zizyphus listing — calming the neuroendocrine environment in which the hair follicles operate.
Topically, Brahmi’s active bacosides nourish the scalp’s vascular environment, strengthen the hair shaft from root to tip, and support the healthy follicular activity that produces thick, resilient growth.
Amla / Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica)
The unquestioned king of Ayurvedic hair care. Amla has been used as an elixir for the hair since time immemorial — and modern research is now explaining exactly why. Extraordinarily rich in Vitamin C, tannins, flavonoids, and fatty acids, Amla is one of the most potent natural inhibitors of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase — the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT, the primary hormonal driver of pattern hair loss in both men and women.
Amla also directly nourishes the scalp with the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytonutrients that feed the hair follicle at its root. It reduces scalp inflammation — a critical and often overlooked driver of hair thinning. It addresses premature greying by supporting the melanocyte activity responsible for hair pigmentation. And it delivers, through its extraordinary antioxidant complex, the cellular protection that prevents the oxidative damage that accelerates follicular ageing.
This is Ayurveda’s foremost hair herb — and its inclusion here alongside Brahmi creates a pairing of unmatched depth for comprehensive hair and scalp health.
The Supporting Formula
What This Oil Addresses
- ✔️ Hair loss and thinning — dual-mechanism DHT inhibition through Amla’s 5-alpha reductase inhibition and Rosemary’s receptor-level activity, supported by improved scalp microcirculation
- ✔️ Stress-related hair loss — Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Vetiver address the neuroendocrine drivers of stress-induced shedding directly
- ✔️ Premature greying — Amla and Jatamansi support the melanocyte activity responsible for natural hair pigmentation
- ✔️ Scalp inflammation, psoriasis, and eczema — Aloe, Licorice, and Vetiver provide a comprehensive anti-inflammatory and soothing action for reactive and compromised scalps
- ✔️ Dry, brittle, or damaged hair — MCT Coconut Oil penetrates the hair shaft to reduce protein loss; the full formula deeply conditions from root to tip
- ✔️ Sun damage to hair and scalp — Sesame’s sesamol, Vitamin E, and Amla’s antioxidant complex protect against and help restore UV-induced oxidative damage
- ✔️ Split ends and flyaways — the leave-in application with one or two drops smoothed over ends seals and conditions without weight or grease
- ✔️ Beard and body hair — the formula’s nourishing, softening, and growth-supporting properties extend fully to beard care and body hair health
- ✔️ Mental tension and sleeplessness — the Jatamansi, Brahmi, and Vetiver nervine complex, delivered through the scalp’s marma points during massage, has a calming, sleep-promoting effect that goes well beyond what any topical hair product typically offers
Directions
Pre-wash scalp treatment: Apply a small amount and massage into the scalp in circular motions, working from the crown toward the ears and the base of the skull. Use the fingertips rhythmically and gently — this is Shiro Abhyanga, not vigorous rubbing. Leave for a minimum of 30 minutes before washing. For deep conditioning, leave overnight.
Wash with a mild or herbal shampoo after treatment. Comb or brush once dry.
Leave-in treatment for ends: Warm one or two drops between the palms and smooth over dry or split ends — adds lustre and weight without greasiness.
Beard and body hair: Warm a few drops between the hands and work gently through beard or body hair for softness, smoothness, and healthy growth support.
Practitioner Heritage
I am proud to stock this oil as part of the broader Sundara hair care range — a formula that brings genuine clinical depth to what is too often a superficial product category. The combination of Brahmi, Amla, and Rosemary represents the meeting of three thousand years of Ayurvedic hair wisdom with some of the most compelling recent research in natural hair care. For the person who has tried the shampoos and the serums and found them wanting — this is where the real work begins.
