Brahmi Elixir Hair & Scalp Oil

$40.00

Brahmi. Amla. Rosemary. Jatamansi. Ayurveda’s Most Revered Hair Herbs — In One Elixir.

In Ayurveda, the hair is considered a reflection of the health of the bones and the nervous system. When the body is depleted — when stress is high, when nutrition is inadequate, when the scalp’s circulation is sluggish and the follicles are starved of the nourishment they need — the hair tells the truth before anything else does. It thins. It breaks. It loses its lustre. It greys before its time.

The Ayurvedic response to this has never been a chemical. It has always been oil.

Specifically, herbal oil applied to the scalp and massaged in with intention — a practice called Shiro Abhyanga, or head oil massage — one of the most deeply therapeutic rituals in the entire Ayurvedic tradition. Not simply for the hair, though the effects on hair health are extraordinary. But for the nervous system, the mind, the quality of sleep, and the sense of deep nourishment that comes from attending to a part of the body that modern life tends to strip and neglect rather than feed and restore.

The Brahmi Elixir Hair & Scalp Oil was built for this practice — and built for it with a level of botanical intelligence that is immediately apparent the moment you see the ingredient list. Eleven ingredients. Every single one chosen with clinical precision. Two of the most respected hair herbs in Ayurvedic tradition as the dual pillars. And a supporting cast that includes one of the most exciting developments in modern hair loss research. For all hair types. For all genders. For scalp, beard, body hair, and the ends of dry, damaged strands.

This is not a hair oil. This is a comprehensive hair and scalp restoration elixir.

Chyavanprash Ayurvedic Tonic

The Ayurvedic Tradition of Shiro Abhyanga — Why Head Oiling Works

The scalp is one of the richest concentrations of marma points — the energetic access points that Ayurveda maps throughout the body. When warm oil is massaged into the scalp with rhythmic, intentional touch, it does not simply nourish the hair follicles. It works through the marma system to calm the nervous system, reduce excess Vata and Pitta in the head, promote deep and restorative sleep, and address the anxiety and mental overactivity that so often accompany the hormonal and nutritional drivers of hair loss.

This dual action — therapeutic for the hair AND for the mind — is why Shiro Abhyanga has been central to Ayurvedic self-care for thousands of years. And it is why this oil, with its Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Vetiver nervine complex working alongside its hair-specific botanicals, delivers more than any targeted hair serum alone could offer.

The Two Pillars — Brahmi & Amla

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

In the context of hair care, Brahmi’s role is profound and twofold. As a powerful nervine adaptogen, it addresses the stress and nervous system activation that is one of the most common — and most overlooked — drivers of hair loss. Chronic cortisol elevation directly disrupts the hair growth cycle, pushing follicles prematurely into the telogen (resting) phase and resulting in the accelerated shedding that so many people experience during periods of sustained pressure. Brahmi applied to the scalp works through the same GABA-modulating and cortisol-reducing pathways described in our Magnolia Zizyphus listing — calming the neuroendocrine environment in which the hair follicles operate.

Topically, Brahmi’s active bacosides nourish the scalp’s vascular environment, strengthen the hair shaft from root to tip, and support the healthy follicular activity that produces thick, resilient growth.

Amla / Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica)

The unquestioned king of Ayurvedic hair care. Amla has been used as an elixir for the hair since time immemorial — and modern research is now explaining exactly why. Extraordinarily rich in Vitamin C, tannins, flavonoids, and fatty acids, Amla is one of the most potent natural inhibitors of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase — the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT, the primary hormonal driver of pattern hair loss in both men and women.

Amla also directly nourishes the scalp with the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytonutrients that feed the hair follicle at its root. It reduces scalp inflammation — a critical and often overlooked driver of hair thinning. It addresses premature greying by supporting the melanocyte activity responsible for hair pigmentation. And it delivers, through its extraordinary antioxidant complex, the cellular protection that prevents the oxidative damage that accelerates follicular ageing.

This is Ayurveda’s foremost hair herb — and its inclusion here alongside Brahmi creates a pairing of unmatched depth for comprehensive hair and scalp health.

The Supporting Formula

Sesame Seed Oil (Sesamum indicum) The deeply penetrating, warming Ayurvedic base — carrying the herb extracts through the scalp’s layers to the follicle bed where they are most needed. Sesame’s natural sesamol content adds its own antioxidant and UV-protective properties to the formula, supporting the scalp against environmental damage.
MCT Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) Medium-chain triglycerides from coconut oil — lightweight, rapidly absorbed, and with a unique capacity to penetrate the hair shaft itself (not just the scalp surface) to reduce protein loss from both damaged and undamaged hair. MCT Coconut Oil brings the moisture-sealing, protein-protecting quality that keeps hair strong and resilient from the inside out, without the heaviness of full coconut oil.
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) The scalp soother — deeply hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and actively supportive of scalp conditions including psoriasis, eczema, and the chronic irritation and flaking that accompany scalp inflammation. Aloe’s proteolytic enzymes also support the clearing of dead skin cells from the follicle opening, removing the physical barrier that can impede healthy hair growth.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) A deeply anti-inflammatory and scalp-soothing botanical — licorice’s active compound, glabridin, reduces scalp inflammation and irritation while supporting the healthy hormonal environment at the follicle level. Combined with Amla’s DHT-inhibiting properties, licorice adds a complementary anti-inflammatory dimension to the formula’s hair loss prevention action.
Spikenard / Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) The sacred nervine — encountered across this range in Super Brain Capsules, Saraswatharishtam, and the Kapha Massage Oil — here bringing its deeply calming, scalp-tonifying properties to the formula. Jatamansi has been used in Ayurveda specifically for hair health for centuries — supporting healthy melanocyte activity (and therefore natural hair colour), reducing scalp inflammation, calming the nervous system tension that drives stress-related hair loss, and bringing a quality of deep nourishment to hair follicles that have been starved by chronic stress and depletion.
Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) The cooling, grounding nervine — supporting healthy scalp circulation, reducing inflammatory heat in the follicular environment, and contributing its emotionally grounding quality to a formula that works as much on the nervous system as on the hair itself.
Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) This is the ingredient that brings this formula into direct conversation with some of the most exciting hair research in recent years. A landmark 2023 clinical study compared Rosemary oil to Minoxidil — the pharmaceutical standard for androgenetic alopecia — and found comparable efficacy for hair count improvement at six months, with significantly fewer side effects including scalp itching and dryness. Rosemary’s active compounds, primarily rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid, improve scalp microcirculation, inhibit DHT binding at the follicle receptor, and directly stimulate follicular activity. Its inclusion here alongside Amla’s 5-alpha reductase inhibition creates a dual-mechanism approach to DHT-driven hair loss that is clinically meaningful and entirely natural.
Jasmine Sambac Absolute (Jasminum sambac) The aromatic heart of this formula — Jasmine Sambac brings its deeply feminine, intensely floral, and emotionally uplifting fragrance to what would otherwise be a purely medicinal oil. Its presence transforms Shiro Abhyanga from a health practice into a sensory ritual — the scent alone producing the relaxation response that enhances everything the formula does for the nervous system and scalp. Jasmine also carries mild antimicrobial and scalp-conditioning properties of its own.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol Acetate) The antioxidant seal — protecting the formula’s precious unsaturated fatty acids from oxidation while contributing its own cellular-protective and hair-shaft-strengthening properties to the finished product.

Directions

Pre-wash scalp treatment: Apply a small amount and massage into the scalp in circular motions, working from the crown toward the ears and the base of the skull. Use the fingertips rhythmically and gently — this is Shiro Abhyanga, not vigorous rubbing. Leave for a minimum of 30 minutes before washing. For deep conditioning, leave overnight.

Wash with a mild or herbal shampoo after treatment. Comb or brush once dry.

Leave-in treatment for ends: Warm one or two drops between the palms and smooth over dry or split ends — adds lustre and weight without greasiness.

Beard and body hair: Warm a few drops between the hands and work gently through beard or body hair for softness, smoothness, and healthy growth support.

Practitioner Heritage

I am proud to stock this oil as part of the broader Sundara hair care range — a formula that brings genuine clinical depth to what is too often a superficial product category. The combination of Brahmi, Amla, and Rosemary represents the meeting of three thousand years of Ayurvedic hair wisdom with some of the most compelling recent research in natural hair care. For the person who has tried the shampoos and the serums and found them wanting — this is where the real work begins.
