If the Vata Massage Oil is warmth and grounding, the Pitta Massage Oil is its elemental opposite — a cool, fresh, deeply calming formula designed for the body that runs hot.

And in the modern world, most of us run hotter than we realise.

Pitta is the fire and water element in Ayurvedic philosophy — governing digestion, metabolism, body temperature, ambition, intellect, and the emotional landscape of passion, drive, and intensity. When Pitta is in balance, it produces clarity of mind, warmth of personality, and the focused energy that gets things done. When it tips into excess — as it so readily does under pressure, in heat, through overwork, perfectionism, irritability, and the constant demands of a high-achieving life — the fire begins to burn where it shouldn’t. Inflamed skin. Sensitive digestion. Sharp temper. Overheating. Rashes. The relentless feeling that the body and mind are running too hot and too fast without a way to cool down.

This oil is the way to cool down.

Formulated by Maharishi Ayurveda with the precision that defines everything this brand produces — a ripened organic sesame base carrying a carefully extracted complex of eight classical Pitta-pacifying botanicals — this is Abhyanga as a cooling ceremony. A daily practice of deliberate calm for the body that burns bright and needs something to bring it back to ease.

The Pitta Foundation — Understanding the Fire Element

In Ayurveda, Pitta governs all transformation — the digestion of food, the processing of experience, the burning of ambition, the sharpness of intellect. Pitta types and Pitta seasons (summer, midday, middle age) are characterised by intensity, heat, and the tendency to push harder and run hotter than is sustainable over time.

The skin is one of the first places Pitta excess makes itself known — sensitivity, redness, inflammation, acne, and the reactive quality that makes many Pitta-dominant people hesitant about what they put on their body. The nervous system follows — irritability, impatience, the inability to switch off from a mind that is always processing, always analysing, always one step ahead.

Where Vata needs warming and grounding, Pitta needs cooling and softening. And this formula delivers both of those qualities in every ingredient — from the cooling botanical extracts to the fresh, tart, almost water-like quality of the fragrance that carries them.

The Ingredients — A Cooling Masterclass

Organic Ripened Sesame Oil (Sesamum indicum) The same COSMOS-certified organic ripened sesame base that forms the foundation of the Vata Oil — deeply penetrating, nourishing, and therapeutically far superior to unripened or refined sesame. In the context of the Pitta formula, sesame’s natural properties are moderated and directed by the cooling herbs it carries, making it the perfect vehicle for the Pitta-pacifying complex that gives this oil its clinical identity.
Cedarwood Oil (Cedrus deodara) Deodar Cedarwood — native to the Himalayas — is one of Ayurveda’s most revered cooling and calming aromatics. Its fresh, woody, mildly camphoraceous scent is deeply settling to an overactive mind, and its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties make it particularly suited to sensitive or reactive skin. Cedarwood is the primary aromatic note that gives this oil its distinctive fresh, tart character — grounding without heaviness, cooling without coldness.
Turpentine Pine Oil (Pinus roxburghii) A surprising but classically grounded inclusion — the resin-derived oil of the Himalayan Long-leaf Pine, used in Ayurvedic formulations for its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and circulatory properties. Applied topically, it supports the clearing of heat from the superficial tissues, eases muscle tension driven by excess Pitta, and contributes to the fresh, clean, forest-like quality of the oil’s aroma.
Vetiver Oil (Vetiveria zizanioides) One of the most deeply cooling botanicals in the Ayurvedic tradition — used specifically to reduce excess heat, calm inflamed or irritated skin, and bring a profound sense of emotional cooling to states of anger, frustration, and the emotional heat that accompanies Pitta excess. Vetiver’s fragrance is deep, earthy, and grounding — the cooling earth beneath the fire — and its presence in this formula both as an essential oil and as an aqueous extract amplifies its Pitta-pacifying effect considerably.
Blue Water Lily (Nymphaea stellata) — Aqueous Extract Perhaps the most poetic and botanically exquisite ingredient in this formula — the Blue Water Lily, blooming on still water, is one of Ayurveda’s classical symbols of cooling, beauty, and calm. Used in traditional formulations to soothe inflamed and sensitive skin, reduce surface redness and heat, and bring a quality of stillness and softness to the tissue it touches. Its aqueous extract is absorbed easily through the skin and works gently but persistently to reduce the inflammatory burden that Pitta excess creates.
Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) — Aqueous Extract Delivered here as both essential oil and aqueous extract for a layered, sustained cooling effect — the essential oil working at the aromatic and surface level, the aqueous extract penetrating more deeply into the dermal layers where Pitta inflammation often originates.
Thatch Grass / Flame Grass (Imperata cylindrica) — Aqueous Extract Known in Ayurveda as Darbha or Kusha grass — one of the most sacred plants in the Vedic tradition, used in ritual, medicine, and spiritual practice for thousands of years. Classically used as a cooling diuretic and anti-inflammatory, Imperata cylindrica brings its deeply Pitta-reducing, tissue-soothing qualities to the formula. Its inclusion here is both clinically precise and deeply traditional — the plant that Ayurvedic texts describe as cooling, purifying, and sacred.
Sandalwood White (Santalum album) — Aqueous Extract The crown of this formula. White Sandalwood is Ayurveda’s most revered cooling, anti-inflammatory, and skin-soothing botanical — used across millennia for its capacity to reduce surface heat, calm inflamed tissue, soothe sensitive and reactive skin, and bring a quality of deep, dignified calm to an overheated system. Its aqueous extract penetrates the skin beautifully, delivering its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties at a cellular level, and contributing the faint, warm-cool, sacred fragrance that makes Sandalwood so instantly recognisable and so deeply associated with the healing tradition from which this formula comes.

What Pitta Massage Oil Addresses

  • ✔️ Excess heat in the body and skin — cooling botanical complex directly reduces the inflammatory and thermal burden of Pitta excess
  • ✔️ Sensitive, reactive, or inflamed skin — Sandalwood, Blue Water Lily, and Vetiver are among the most clinically validated botanicals for calming reactive skin from the outside in
  • ✔️ Redness, skin irritation, and heat rashes — the cooling anti-inflammatory action of this formula addresses the surface manifestations of excess Pitta directly
  • ✔️ Emotional heat — irritability, frustration, impatience, and the sharp edges of a mind that won’t soften — addressed through both the aromatic nervous system pathway and the absorbed botanical extracts
  • ✔️ Mental overstimulation and perfectionism — the cooling, grounding quality of Cedarwood and Vetiver specifically quiets the overactive Pitta mind
  • ✔️ Post-exercise recovery for Pitta types — reduces the inflammatory heat generated by intense physical activity and supports faster tissue recovery
  • ✔️ Summer Abhyanga — the ideal oil for the warmer months when any constitutionally warming oil becomes counterproductive and the body craves cooling instead
  • ✔️ Pre-sleep foot massage — the cooling, calming aromatics make this a profoundly settling evening ritual for anyone who has difficulty switching off a busy, hot, active mind

The Experience

Where the Vata Oil wraps the body in warmth and groundedness, the Pitta Oil offers something different — a fresh, cooling, almost medicinal clarity that immediately signals to an overheated nervous system that the fire is being banked. The scent is crisp and tart rather than sweet, dominated by Cedarwood and Vetiver with the faint sacred undertone of Sandalwood beneath. It smells like still water and forest floor and the cool of early morning before the day heats up.

On the skin it feels light rather than heavy, absorbing cleanly rather than sitting on the surface — appropriate for the typically warmer, more reactive Pitta skin that needs to breathe as much as it needs to be nourished. The cumulative effect of regular use is visibly calmer, less reactive skin, and the kind of emotional steadiness that comes from a nervous system that is no longer perpetually overheating.

This is Abhyanga for the person who runs hot, works hard, and needs beauty rituals that are also genuinely cooling medicine.

Directions

Warm gently in the hands — Pitta types generally need less warmth in their oil than Vata types, so a gentle hand-warming is usually sufficient. Apply generously and massage into the body using long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes at the joints. Allow 10–15 minutes before a lukewarm (not hot) shower — Pitta types benefit from slightly cooler shower temperatures, which extends the cooling effect of the practice rather than undermining it.
For sensitive or inflamed areas: apply directly to the affected skin and allow to absorb without washing off.
For a pre-sleep ritual: apply warm oil to the soles of the feet and the back of the neck — two of the most effective access points for calming an overactive Pitta nervous system before bed.
Suitable for normal to sensitive skin. Particularly recommended for Pitta and Pitta-dominant dual constitutions.
