Toning

Not the harsh, alcohol-laden astringents of a previous era that stripped the skin and called it cleansing. But genuine, botanical toning — the application of a pH-balancing, hydrating, antioxidant-rich mist that prepares the skin to receive everything that follows.

After cleansing, the skin’s pH is temporarily disrupted — most cleansers, even gentle ones, are slightly alkaline, which temporarily raises the skin’s surface pH away from its naturally protective acidic state. In this disrupted state, the skin’s barrier function is compromised, its absorption capacity is altered, and the face oils and serums applied immediately after are not absorbed with the efficiency they deserve.

A toner restores the skin’s natural pH within seconds — returning it to the slightly acidic environment in which its barrier functions optimally, its absorption is maximised, and the botanical actives in everything applied afterward can penetrate with full effectiveness.

This is why the Rose & Kakadu Plum Toning Face Mist is not an optional extra in the Sundara facial ritual. It is the step that makes the Saffron Glow Day Face Oil and the Manjish Elixir Night Face Oil work better — the botanical bridge between cleansing and nourishment that ensures nothing you apply to your skin is wasted.

And it does all of this while being, in its own right, one of the most beautiful things you will ever spray on your face.

The pH Science — Why Toning Matters More Than You Know

The skin’s acid mantle — the fine film of sebum, sweat, and naturally occurring acids that covers the skin’s surface — maintains a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5. This slightly acidic environment is not incidental. It is the foundation of everything the skin does to protect and maintain itself: keeping harmful bacteria and environmental pathogens out, maintaining the structural integrity of the skin barrier, regulating the enzymes responsible for healthy cell turnover, and creating the optimal environment for the beneficial microbiome that lives on the skin’s surface.

When this pH is disrupted upward — by alkaline cleansers, hard water, or environmental exposure — the skin’s defences are temporarily lowered. Bacteria that the acid mantle normally holds at bay can proliferate. The enzymes that drive healthy cell turnover become dysregulated. Skin feels tight, reactive, or congested in ways that seem disproportionate to what was applied.

Rose water, the primary ingredient in this mist, has a naturally slightly acidic pH — a perfect botanical vehicle for gentle, immediate pH restoration. Spritzed onto cleansed skin, it returns the acid mantle to its functional range within moments, preparing the skin to receive the rich botanical actives of the Saffron Glow or Manjish Elixir from a position of optimal receptivity.

This is the toning science. And it is why the spritz before the oil is not a luxury — it is an intelligent, two-second step that multiplies the effectiveness of everything applied afterward.

The Ingredients — Seven Botanicals, Each Essential

Rose Water (Rosa damascena) The primary and most abundant ingredient — Rosa damascena rose water, distilled from the petals of the Damask Rose, is one of the most celebrated skin-care ingredients in human history. Used in Ayurvedic, Persian, and European beauty traditions for millennia, it brings a remarkably complete profile of benefits to the skin in a single ingredient: natural astringency that tightens pores and firms the skin’s surface, anti-inflammatory properties that calm redness and reactive skin, a mild natural acidity that supports pH restoration, gentle antimicrobial activity, and a profoundly conditioning quality that leaves the skin soft, hydrated, and fragrant.
Rose Water in Ayurveda Rose water is also understood in Ayurveda as deeply Pitta-pacifying — cooling the heat and inflammation that Pitta-dominant and sensitive skin types carry, and bringing a quality of emotional calm and sensory pleasure to a ritual that is as much about how it feels as what it does.
Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) The skin’s most reliable hydrating and soothing companion — encountered throughout the Sundara facial range. In this mist, Aloe’s role is to lock in the hydration delivered by the Rose Water, support the skin barrier’s integrity immediately after cleansing, and begin the anti-inflammatory work that prepares reactive or sensitised skin for the richer botanicals to follow.
Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) — Dual Delivery: Extract & Whole Fruit Encountered already in the Rosemary Hair & Scalp Fortifying Spray in the hair range — here in its rightful position as the hero ingredient of a facial skin care formula, and appearing twice in this formula for a reason.
Kakadu Plum’s Extraordinary Vitamin C Profile Kakadu Plum is an Australian native fruit carrying the highest recorded concentration of Vitamin C of any known food source — up to 100 times more per gram than an orange. Its antioxidant capacity is extraordinary. Its anti-inflammatory properties are clinically validated. And its role in collagen synthesis and cellular repair makes it one of the most intelligent inclusions possible in a formula that prepares the skin for its daily or nightly regenerative ritual.
Kakadu Plum’s Role in the Toning Ritual Applied in the toning mist before the face oil, Kakadu Plum delivers an immediate antioxidant burst to the freshly cleansed skin — neutralising any residual free radical activity from environmental exposure, supporting the cellular environment in which the face oil’s deeper actives will work, and contributing its own brightening and protective properties to the skin’s surface before anything else is applied.
Dual Delivery Advantage Its dual presence — as both an extract and a whole-fruit preparation — ensures both the concentrated active compounds and the broader phytonutrient profile of the whole fruit are delivered. This is the formulation intelligence of a brand that understands that extracts and whole plants offer different and complementary therapeutic dimensions.
MCT Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) A light, non-occlusive carrier — included in this water-based mist in micro-emulsified form to enhance the delivery of the fat-soluble active compounds to the skin’s surface. Its presence ensures the Kakadu Plum and Rose Geranium actives are not simply sitting on the skin’s surface but actively penetrating to the upper dermal layers where they work most effectively.
Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium roseum) The aromatic and therapeutic anchor — Rose Geranium’s sebum-balancing, skin-regenerating, and emotionally uplifting properties are delivered here both as a therapeutic active and as the fragrance that makes this mist genuinely sensory. Its naturally balancing properties make it appropriate for every skin type — toning for oily skin, nourishing for dry, calming for sensitive — and its fragrance brings a brief, beautiful moment of floral calm to what would otherwise be a purely functional step.
Glycerol The humectant seal — drawing moisture from the environment into the skin’s surface layers and holding it there, ensuring the hydration delivered by the Rose Water and Aloe is maintained through the skin’s natural evaporation processes until the face oil is applied to seal it in.

The Complete Facial Ritual — Where This Mist Sits

Step 1 — Cleanse

Gently cleanse the face to remove the day’s or night’s accumulation.

Step 2 — Tone

Rose & Kakadu Plum Toning Face Mist — close the eyes, take a breath, and spritz 1–2 times over the face and neck.

Allow to settle for 30 seconds before proceeding. This is the step that prepares. The pause that makes the next step work.

Step 3 — Nourish

Morning: Saffron Glow Day Face Oil — applied to the still-slightly-damp toned skin for maximum absorption.

Evening: Manjish Elixir Night Face Oil — applied to toned skin before sleep for overnight restoration.

Three steps. Two minutes. The complete Ayurvedic facial ritual — cleanse, tone, nourish — working with the skin’s own intelligence at every stage.

Directions

Close your eyes and take a breath before applying. Spritz 1–2 times over the face and neck from approximately 20cm distance, or spray onto a cotton pad and sweep gently across the face and neck.

Allow to settle briefly before applying your face oil.

Use morning and evening as the step between cleansing and face oil application. Use additionally through the day as a midday refresh, complexion reviver, or cooling spritz — particularly welcome in warmer weather.

Summer tip: Place the bottle in the refrigerator for a cooler, more refreshing application — the cold mist is particularly soothing for Pitta skin in warm weather.

Suitable for all skin types. Suitable for use over makeup for a midday refresh without disturbing application.
