Organic. Warming. Herb-Infused. Abhyanga Elevated. BDIH/COSMOS Organic Certified.

Vegan · Gluten Free · Made in India

You already know the power of Black Sesame Oil for Abhyanga — the ancient daily self-massage that nourishes the nervous system, grounds the mind, and restores the body from the outside in. It is foundational, and it is irreplaceable.

This is what comes next.

The Maharishi Ayurveda Vata Massage Oil takes everything that makes Black Sesame Oil extraordinary and layers upon it something more — a carefully formulated blend of organic ripened sesame oil infused with Ayurvedic botanical extracts, elevated with the bright, warming aromatics of pure lemongrass, and crafted by one of the most respected Ayurvedic brands in the world. It is not a replacement for plain sesame oil. It is a deepening of the practice — a more luxurious, more herbally complex, more sensorially rich version of the same foundational ritual, for the days and seasons when the body asks for something more.

Think of it as Abhyanga in its full expression. The same wisdom. A more enveloping embrace.

Maharishi Ayurveda — A Name That Carries Weight

Maharishi Ayurveda is not a wellness trend brand that discovered Ayurveda last year. It is one of the oldest and most deeply respected Ayurvedic product companies in the world — its formulations developed under the guidance of some of the most eminent Ayurvedic physicians of the modern era, rooted in the classical tradition of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and the revival of authentic Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health. Every formula in the range is developed with clinical depth, sourced with integrity, and manufactured to standards that honour the tradition it comes from.

The Vata Massage Oil carries BDIH/COSMOS Organic certification — the internationally recognised gold standard for verified organic cosmetics — confirming that every ingredient meets rigorous standards of organic sourcing, ethical production, and freedom from synthetic chemicals. It is also fully vegan and gluten free.

When a Maharishi Ayurveda product says it is organic and formulated for Vata, it means exactly that — not as a marketing category, but as a precise clinical intention.

The Vata Foundation — Why This Oil For This Body Type

In Ayurveda, Vata is the air and space element — governing movement, nervous system function, circulation, the quality of the skin, the flexibility of the joints, and the overall lightness or groundedness of the body and mind. When Vata is in balance, the body feels fluid, creative, and alive. When Vata is in excess — as it so commonly is in modern life — the body becomes dry, cold, light, scattered, and anxious. The skin loses its lustre and moisture. The joints ache. Sleep becomes elusive. The mind races and cannot settle.

The antidote to excess Vata is warmth, heaviness, moisture, and stability — and these are precisely the qualities that this oil delivers. Warming sesame as the base. Warming lemongrass as the aromatic. Warming, tonifying Ayurvedic herbs as the therapeutic layer beneath. This oil grounds, warms, nourishes, and returns the body to a sense of solidity and ease that Vata excess has quietly eroded.

The Ingredients — What Makes This Formula

Organic Ripened Sesame Oil (Sesamum indicum)
The same deeply warming, penetrating, Vata-pacifying base that forms the foundation of Ayurvedic Abhyanga — but here sourced from controlled organic cultivation and ripened to enhance its therapeutic potency. Ripening sesame oil is a traditional Ayurvedic preparation process in which the raw oil is heated and treated to remove moisture and impurities, increasing its stability, depth of penetration, and warming quality. It is this process that gives the oil its rich, complex character and its superior capacity to carry the herb extracts deep into the tissues.
Lemongrass Oil (Cymbopogon schoenanthus)
Pure, 100% natural lemongrass essential oil — bright, warming, and uplifting. Lemongrass brings a summery, citrus-herbal fragrance that transforms Abhyanga from a wellness habit into a genuinely sensory experience. Its warming and stimulating properties are perfectly aligned with Vata’s need for heat and activation, and its naturally antimicrobial quality supports the skin’s protective barrier. This is the note that makes this oil instantly recognisable and deeply pleasurable to work with.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) — Aqueous Extract
Ayurveda’s great adaptogenic rasayana, delivered here as a skin-absorbed botanical extract. Ashwagandha’s calming, grounding, and restorative properties — so well established in internal supplementation — are also expressed through topical application, where it supports the nervous system directly through the skin, reduces surface inflammation, and contributes the deep tonic quality that makes Vata-pacifying formulas genuinely restorative rather than simply moisturising.
Mimosa Pudica (Sensitive Plant) — Aqueous Extract
A beautiful and somewhat surprising inclusion — Mimosa Pudica, the plant whose leaves fold inward at the touch, is used in Ayurveda for its nervine, anti-inflammatory, and skin-healing properties. Applied topically, it soothes irritated or sensitised skin, supports the healing of tissue under physical or environmental stress, and contributes a gentle calming quality to the formula that complements Ashwagandha’s deeper tonic action.
Sida Cordifolia (Country Mallow) — Aqueous Extract
A classical Ayurvedic herb deeply aligned with Vata balancing — warming, strengthening, and specifically indicated for supporting muscle tone, joint flexibility, and the physical resilience of the body. Used extensively in Ayurvedic sports and rehabilitation massage formulas, Sida Cordifolia brings an activating, strengthening quality to this oil that makes it particularly valuable post-exercise, during recovery, or whenever the body needs both nourishment and rebuilding.
Convolvulus pluricaulis (Shankhapushpi) — Aqueous Extract
The same medhya herb found in the Super Brain Capsules — here expressed through the skin, bringing its nervine calming, mind-quieting properties to an Abhyanga ritual that is already deeply supportive of the nervous system. Shankhapushpi works at the intersection of the physical and the mental, making this oil as much a practice for the mind as for the body.

The Experience — What Sets This Apart

Plain Black Sesame Oil is the essential, the medicinal, the foundational. It is the oil you use every day because the body needs it.

This is the oil you reach for when you want the ritual to also be a pleasure. When you want warmth that you can smell as well as feel. When you want the herbs to speak directly to the nervous system as the hands move through the practice. When you want Abhyanga to feel less like maintenance and more like ceremony.

The lemongrass fragrance is bright without being sharp, warming without being heavy, and summery in a way that makes even a cold morning feel like an act of self-celebration. The texture of the ripened sesame base is rich and deeply penetrating without leaving the skin feeling greasy. And the herb complex beneath — Ashwagandha, Mimosa, Sida Cordifolia, Shankhapushpi — works quietly and cumulatively to support the nervous system, the joints, the muscles, and the skin simultaneously.

This is Abhyanga at its full expression. Organic. Warming. Luxurious. Precisely formulated. And entirely worth it.

What Vata Massage Oil Addresses

  • ✔️ Dry, rough, or dull skin — ripened sesame and herb extracts nourish and restore skin texture and lustre at a cellular level
  • ✔️ Cold, stiff, or tight muscles and joints — warming lemongrass and Sida Cordifolia activate circulation and ease physical tension
  • ✔️ Nervous system activation and anxiety — Ashwagandha and Shankhapushpi calm the nervous system through skin absorption
  • ✔️ Post-exercise recovery — Sida Cordifolia’s muscle-supporting properties make this ideal for recovery massage
  • ✔️ The scattered, ungrounded quality of excess Vata — the warmth, weight, and stability of this formula directly addresses the lightness and disconnection of Vata imbalance
  • ✔️ A pre-sleep foot massage — deeply calming for an overstimulated nervous system and profoundly settling as a bedtime ritual
  • ✔️ Daily Abhyanga elevated — for those who want their morning ritual to also be a sensory experience

Directions

Warm a small amount in your palms or by placing the bottle briefly in warm water. Apply generously and massage into the body using long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes at the joints. Allow 10–15 minutes before showering. The warmth of a shower will help drive the remaining oil deeper into the tissues while rinsing the surface.
For a pre-sleep foot massage: apply warm oil to the soles of the feet and massage thoroughly before bed — one of the most grounding and sleep-supportive Ayurvedic practices available.
Suitable for all skin types, with particular benefit for normal to dry, rough, or combination skin.
